At an altitude of 3,200 to 4,800 metres above the deserted South American Andes, the untouched camel Vicuna survives strongly, possessing a masterpiece of nature: its spicy, thick, soft, and extremely warm fur, which is also the material for weaving the most perfect fabric that man has ever known - the fabric of Vicuna.
VICUNA - THE MOST PRECIOUS AND LUXURIOUS
Vicuña fibers, also known as "vicuña wool," are highly prized natural fibers obtained from the fleece of the vicuña, a small and wild South American camelid. Vicuñas are native to the Andean regions of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. The fibers from vicuñas are renowned for their exceptional softness, lightweight feel, and insulating properties. Here are some key points about vicuña fibers:
Vicuna fibers are very lightweight, smoother than Cashmere goat feathers, and super-fragmented (only 12-14 microns thick, while Cashmere is 19 micrones, and sheep's feather is 25 micres thick). The twisting of the fibers also forms a micro-gas absorption pocket that is thermal insulation, absolute heat retention and high electrode insulation (while other types of wool are electrically charged).
Scarcity
The collection of Vicuña fur is difficult and requires strict observance of the animal protection regulations. A Vicuña only provides a very small amount of hair (about a few grams) per year, and the harvest must be carried out carefully so as not to damage them.
The value
Despite being incredibly soft and lightweight, vicuña fibers offer excellent insulation. They help regulate body temperature by trapping air within the fiber structure, making them suitable for both warm and cold climates.
However, Vicuña fibers are among the most expensive natural fibers globally, with prices often exceeding even the finest cashmere. The scarcity, labor-intensive harvesting process, and the need for ethical and sustainable practices contribute to the high cost.
Vicuña fibers are highly sought after in the fashion industry for creating luxurious garments and accessories, including scarves, shawls, sweaters, coats, and suits. These items are considered symbols of opulence and are often found in high-end boutiques and designer collections.
Vicuna collection by the SCABAL
Scabal has launched the latest Vicuna Collection, with 6 luxurious designs made from 100% Vicuna fibres: 3 bold checks and 3 classic fish bones. (herringbone).
Unlike the first Vicuna fabric that was combined in simple tones, the new collection is more varied and fashionable with the dark blue, the burgundy red and the original caramel of the Vicuna camel fur.
Scarce and Protected
Due to the limited number of individuals and strict conservation policies, each Vicuna is allowed to shave only once every two years, and approximately five times throughout its life cycle. It takes an average of 35 Vicunas to supply enough finished wool to make a shirt. Because of its extreme rarity and excellent quality, no fabric in the world surpasses Vicuna in cost and luxury.
Therefore, Vicuñas are protected by international and national laws due to their endangered status. Harvesting vicuña fibers is tightly regulated, and the animals are not harmed during the collection process. Only a limited amount of fibers can be collected from each vicuña once every few years. As we can see that the Peruvian Government and many international organizations have taken measures to protect Vicuna to ensure the survival of the species and maintain the supply of Vicuña fur.
