SARTORIAL ELEGANCE: DRESSING TO IMPRESS AT FORMAL EVENTS

VEST

If it is a formal event then chances are you don't want to take a chance on anything garish like multi-print pac-man suits. Keep it simple, a well-fitted suit in a classic colour like black, charcoal grey, or navy is a safe choice. Ensure the suit is tailored to your measurements. One should try and opt for quality and premium. For example a bespoke dress shirt will speak volumes especially if pressed and with a personal detail. Maybe a monogram inside the cuff or some quirky cufflinks that show off your personality.

TUXEDO

For black-tie events, a tuxedo is required. It consists of a black jacket, black trousers, a formal white shirt, a black bowtie, and black formal shoes. Some events will allow you to wear a velvet tuxedo jacket and this would be a good option if you're looking to stand out. Please for the love of Christ learn to tie a bow tie. A fake one just makes you look like a waiter on a Cruise ship.

FOOTWEAR

Men should wear polished dress shoes (e.g., Oxfords) that match the colour of their suit. We should avoid converse with suits at all times. You're not Lewis Hamilton. Even if you are, Lewis, come on. You're better than that.

ACCESSORIES

Minimal and tasteful accessories are key. A simple tie, cufflinks, and a pocket square for men. Of course I run my own jewellery brand thanks for asking. However, I also champion some absolute cracking jewellery brands such as Thomas Sabo.

GROOMING

Ensure your hair and grooming are well-maintained. Men should be clean-shaven or have a neatly trimmed beard. That said, if you do go bearded, please apply the appropriate beard oil. For value, Murdock of London cannot be beat. Anything to avoid the down and out look of Winthorpe from Trading Places when he eats a raw salmon through his santa beard on the back of a bus.

COLOURS

Stick to classic and subdued colours for formal events. Avoid overly bright or flashy colours. I think women and the gays can really get way with more in this department. Straight men are best keeping it simple, but high in quality. Try and assemble the best fabrics, the cuts, have it tailored, smell good. Shine the shoes, trim the nostril hair, order the Ubers, remember your keys. Don't check your phone every two minutes.
