FLANNEL – WINTER SPECIALTY

In the cold season, it is impossible not to mention the material known as the king of tailored fabrics. That is wool, and in particular in this article we will mention flannel . It is mentioned the most, it is especially chosen in this weather, because of its warm keeping properties, softness, and unmistakable aesthetic appearance. You can see that a suit with flannel fabric always looks soft and smooth. A feeling of closeness but full of warmth, and very aesthetic. It must be said that flannel is the most unique specialty that can only be found in cold regions

If you learn more about flannel, you will see that it is a vast concept, with different classifications. Because flannel is woven from different types of fibers. Here each type of fiber has different characteristics, thanks to the process of spinning into yarn (yarn), they will be divided into two main groups: Combed and Carded . In this article we will share about one of the most attractive and classic wool lines. The textile industry is a complex industry, and especially in the UK it is also protected by the government. So if we talk carefully, there will be dozens of terms from yarn to brushed... So in this article we will stick to the ideas so that readers can easily grasp and take advantage of them. Keywords for more in-depth search.

Flannel (Left) has a different aesthetic than wool with a ruffled surface and a very straight fabric. You can see it looks very soft and warm compared to normal wool on the right

What is flannel?

Simply put, flannel is a fabric woven with brushed wool fibers to create outstanding softness, and has many different finishing standards. They often come with a slightly ruffled surface, always with a soft cotton feel, and a twill fabric surface.

As just mentioned, a flannel fabric is woven from wool fibers (yarn) , processed through the brushing process with one of two methods : Carded or Combed . This is a way of combing sheep's wool to spin it into textile yarn. Carded is a classic method to create flannel yarn. Brushing will separate both the long and short fibers and then spin them. As for the newer Combed method, it usually involves carding the yarn with a metal spinning cage to separate fibers of equal length and then spinning them into weaving yarn. Combed type usually has a glossier and smoother surface.

For mainstream weavers (especially in the UK), the Carded method is always used; This method is by weaving different long and short fibers, creating the characteristic ruffled style of the fabric.

Flannel aesthetics and how to wear it?

Flannel fabric is the top choice for the cold season, especially the cold weather of Vietnam. It is associated with a very unique beauty, gentleness and warmth. At the same time, the fabric is also very soft when worn. Flannel has a very flattering appearance thanks to the properties of wool fabric, and here they have a different aesthetic because of their characteristic rough surface. Here is a soft cotton feeling, looking like a layer of fine fur on the surface, but not at all like frayed fabric. Flannel can be chosen for both formal and casual occasions. You can see typical flannel-wearing images of the British Crown Prince Charles, the famous Edward Sexton at Savile Rows, or bloggers with very casual styles.

This fabric always evokes a comfortable feeling, not too shiny but warm for the cold season. A pair of gray flannel pants is also a symbol of winter. You can wear it with a flannel shirt of the same color or navy blue, or more casually wear it with tweed. You will look attractive and different from the winter clothes around you, because this fabric has a different feel to it, and on the other hand, not many people in this country have it. Flannel often costs more than regular wool, and is more difficult to buy. Until now, I have only found it possible to find it in a few brands such as Vitale Baberis Canonico of Italy (Via Vietnam Bespoke Shop ) or Huddersfield Cloth which is the easiest to find in Vietnam.

With this type of fabric, it will be a great choice for the cold winter in Vietnam. The reason is because they block the wind very well, keep warm, and are very soft to wear. If you want to sew a pair of flannel pants or shirt, combined with a lining fabric made of Bemberg Cupro, or silk, this will be the perfect choice. Another thing is that because it is made from wool, the wool fiber still retains the properties of natural animals: that is, the fur does not attract dust, and can even release dust on its own. You just need to use a soft bristle brush and brush it every once in a while to get your clothes/shirts clean again.

Some Flannel options.

Now when it comes to what to wear with Flannel, I can advise: Flannel was born to go with the gray color; light gray, neutral gray, dark gray. Then, choose other colors that you can refer to the article: Basic guide to pants. Because with pants, this item can be worn with many types of shirts and shoes, such as wool shirts, flannel shirts, tweed shirts; Shoes can range from boots to derbies. This fabric is a hybrid option between both formal and casual.

After owning pants, a suit coat/jacket will be something that needs to be mentioned. A gray shirt will be the preferred choice, followed by navy blue. Brown flannel shirts need to be more careful, they need to be cut quite well otherwise they can easily be mistaken for old people's shirts - you can read more about the brown shirts that I shared.

Casualize with flannel, no problem. This is the material that gezzaseyes (Instagrammer) always chooses for their winter outfits; in both formal and casual.

Conclude.

If you've felt the need to go beyond basic fabrics, flannel should be your first choice for winter. A specialty product with all the most unique aesthetic features and best feel will not be a bad choice for you.
